English Department

Welcome to the English Department at Burscough Priory Science College. Our department is focused on delivering both English Language and English Literature to each year group throughout the school. Years 7 & 8 are taught in all ability form groups but years 10 and 11 are taught in groups set by ability, Set 1, Set 2, three middle sets and one special needs group. In Years 7 and 8 smaller groups are also created to offer targeted support to pupils requiring additional provision. The department also offers targeted intervention - Reading and Writing Challenges for Year 8 pupils, Booster classes in Year 9 and coursework support sessions in Years 10 and 11. Years 7 and 8 have six one hour teaching periods per fortnight, year 9 has five one hour teaching periods per fortnight and years 10 and 11 receive seven one hour teaching periods per fortnight.

The English Department Schemes of Work for years 7 - 9 are Individual schemes of work based on the English National Curriculum and the Framework for teaching English are followed for each term. Years 10 and 11 follow the WJEC English and English Literature GCSE syllabuses. (These also follow the English N.C.)

Our department aims to ensure that all English lessons should be serious, hard working and enjoyable learning experiences. That all pupils should become confident communicators and should should gain profit and pleasure from literature. Also we believe that all pupils should receive positive reinforcement for good behaviour or work and that positive achievement is to be celebrated.

An Inspector Calls

Saturday, 28 May 2011

A trip consisting of 78 Year 11 students and 5 teachers attended Chorley Little Theatre on Thursday 5th May 2011. The trip took place during the evening and the purpose was to watch a full stage performance of 'An Inspector Calls'.

The play is a set text for the terminal Literature examination in May 2011. The production was very successful and the students watched with interest and enthusiasm and were commended by the ushers working in the theatre for their excellent behaviour. All plans went extremely well and the performance provided an excellent opportunity for students to recap and embed their knowledge of the play in preparation for the imminent exam. It provided a perfect opportunity for the students to revise the plot, storyline and characters in an interesting way.

Year 8’s Wonder ‘Lonely As a Cloud’ at Dove Cottage

Sunday, 19 September 2010
A group of Year 8 pupils enjoyed a day at Dove Cottage exploring the life of William Wordsworth. Pupils embarked on a guided tour of Wordsworth’s home and inspirational gardens, before composing a few lines of literature of their own. Stepping into Wordsworth’s shoes, pupils found the peaceful gardens an ideal place to write their poetry.

An afternoon workshop allowed pupils to consider Wordsworth’s alternative view of London as they studied the poem ‘Composed upon Westminster Bridge’. After studying the Year 8 Poetry Unit, teachers and guides were impressed with the poetic knowledge of these pupils - well done!
