Masterclass Day at Runshaw College

Thursday, 19 April 2012

15 'Gifted and Talented' students from Year 10 attended a 'Masterclass' day at Runshaw College on 17th April 2012. The prestigious college welcomed our students and gave them a taste of what life at Runshaw is really like.

Students selected three subjects that are available for study at Runshaw College and attended lessons in these areas during their visit. These subjects included Film Studies, Business Studies and Critical Thinking which will soon be available to our current Year 9 as options for study at GCSE.

The students were "impressed" with the day and enjoyed the friendly enthusing atmosphere in lessons. One student stated: "The challenge in lessons was great. I took Further Maths and learnt about imaginary numbers".

As Year 10 are coming to the end of the first year of their GCSE courses, it is the perfect time for them to start thinking about which colleges they will be applying to next year.

An Inspector Calls - 2012 Theatre trip

Friday, 16 March 2012

A trip consisting of 47 Year 11 pupils, 5 teachers and 2 teaching assistants attended ‘The Lowry Theatre’ on Tuesday 31st January. The trip took place during the evening, with the purpose to watch a full stage performance of ‘An Inspector Calls’.

The play is a set text for the terminal Literature examination in May 2012. The production was very successful and the pupils watched with interest and enthusiasm. All plans went extremely well and the performance provided an excellent opportunity for pupils to embed and recap their knowledge of the play in preparation for their imminent exam. It provided a perfect opportunity for the pupils to revise the plot, storyline and characters in an interesting way.

Year 8’s Wonder ‘Lonely As a Cloud’ at Dove Cottage

Sunday, 19 September 2010
A group of Year 8 pupils enjoyed a day at Dove Cottage exploring the life of William Wordsworth. Pupils embarked on a guided tour of Wordsworth’s home and inspirational gardens, before composing a few lines of literature of their own. Stepping into Wordsworth’s shoes, pupils found the peaceful gardens an ideal place to write their poetry.

An afternoon workshop allowed pupils to consider Wordsworth’s alternative view of London as they studied the poem ‘Composed upon Westminster Bridge’. After studying the Year 8 Poetry Unit, teachers and guides were impressed with the poetic knowledge of these pupils - well done!
