Technology Department

Welcome to the Design and Technology department at Burscough Priory Science College. The Design and Technology link is aimed at providing you with a brief outline of the department, its resources, equipment and rooms, as well as the curriculum that students follow. Students will also find information on their module change over dates and deadlines on the site.

The department are focused on raising attainment from Year 7 through to Year 11. It consists of four areas: Resistant Materials, Graphic Products, Electronics and Food Technology.

The department performed extremely well during the school year 2009-2010 increasing results to 78.2% A*-C grades. This was achieved with some very dedicated staff within the department, but more importantly some very hard working well disciplined students. Each area follow the following projects as they rotate via the technology carousel.

Food Technology

Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9)

Year 7foodcakes

During Key Stage 3 pupils will be studying a Scheme of Work called ‘Eat Well and Stay Well’ in Year 7. The focus of this unit of work is around healthy eating and the Eatwell Plate. We examine such aspects as basic food hygiene, the safe use and relevant selection of equipment and begin with basic food culinary skills. The students are timetable for two hours per week, of which one lesson is theory based and the other lesson is practical based. All students, during practical sessions will be encouraged to work independently and the recipes chosen will be progressive in skill base. Practical and theory lesson are of a one hour duration.

The foods made include:

  • Fruit Salad
  • Fruit Scones
  • Spicy Sausage and Tomato Sauce
  • Tuna Pasta Mayonnaise
  • Banana Muffins
  • Scone Based Pizza.

Year 8

Our work progresses in skill and our area of focus shifts to a more industrial area of the ‘Food Factory’ in year 8. Within this scheme of work we examine the different methods of making, cakes, biscuits, breads and pastries. We examine aspects of quality control and we push our decorating skills to include enrobing and piping. Our studies continue to include both theory and practical sessions of one hour duration.

  • Cheese and Onion Triangles
  • Decorated Cup Cakes
  • Sweet or Savoury Palmiers

Year 9

This is our final year of Key Stage 3 which shows a leap in progression of skill base for the students. Our scheme of work is ‘The World on a Plate’, which examines international food. We examine popular sweet, savoury and accompaniment dishes from Italy, China, Indian, Thailand, UK and USA. We taste test and analyse many different products to help our understanding and awareness of authentic ingredients. We move onto test our culinary skills where we make full meals. All students are encouraged to try and experiment with unfamiliar ingredients in a bid to encourage individual creativity.
