Sports & Sports Teams

At Priory we pride ourselves in offering both a broad and balanced curriculum and an extensive extra curricular programme, allowing all pupils to access the activities we offer. There are school teams in a variety of activities and we compete in inter district competitions across West Lancashire, competing against Lathom, Our Lady Queen of Peace, Glenburn, St Bedes, Up Holland and Ormskirk School. The district is very well organised and offers numerous different events throughout the year.

NETBALL

The netball teams at Priory are extremely successful and work hard to gain outstanding results. Alongside the West Lancashire competitions the girls often compete in the Lancashire competitions, and also play in the Lancashire netball league at Leyland Motors.

Netball training nights can be found on the extra curricular timetable which is here

FOOTBALL

The football teams have done exceptionally well this year with some excellent results. Last year’s Year 10 won the West Lancashire Cup and were joint winners of the league. The year 9 team came 2nd in the league and were semi-finalists in the cup. Year 8 and 7 both had reasonable cup and league runs.

Each year group play in the West Lancashire league and cup competitions.

At Burscough Priory we currently have some pupils who are attached to professional clubs and who represent the district.

Last year’s football league and cup competition can be found by clicking here.

Training nights can be found in the extra curricular timetable which is here.

RUGBY

This has been a successful year for rugby at Burscough Priory. The year 10 team won their group matches and managed to reach the semi final of the Lancashire Cup being beaten by the eventual winners. The year 9 team is a team growing in strength all the time and they came runners up in their group and got to the quarter finals of the Lancashire Cup.

Priory have great links with Tarleton and Ormskirk rugby clubs, who have helped over the years with training and provided venues.

BASKETBALL

Years 8 – 11 are given the opportunity to represent the school in both U14 and U16 competitions. We have been very successful in recent years reaching the latter stages of the Lancashire and District cup competitions. Last Years U16 team narrowly got beat in the final by St Augustines High School.

ROUNDERS

All years at Priory are well represented in rounders in the Summer term. The District tournaments are held at Priory every year and last year the Year 9 team were winners of the tournament.

Burscough Priory also hosts the Ormskirk and District primary schools sports rounders tournament. This competition is open to all primary schools. In 2010, 25 primary schools entered the competition, with Newburgh Primary taking the title.

GYMNASTICS

gymnastics1Gymnastics sessions are held at lunchtimes in the early terms and pupils are given the opportunity to improve their skills and to be entered into the district annual competition. They also display all their hard work on the school’s open evening.

SWIMMING

Although we do not have a swimming pool at Priory, we enter the district swimming gala each year and have had some impressive results in recent years, coming 2nd in last year’s event and 3rd the previous year.

SPORTS AWARD PRESENTATION EVENING AT BRIARS HALL

DSC00527Last years presentation evening 2009/10 was a great success. All teams were well represented and the evening saw everyone's efforts and successes rewarded. It is a really nice way to end the sporting year as all the students have a 3 course meal followed by the presentation where each student reieves a cerificate and a trophy. The evening is then finished off with a disco!

The students also get the opportunity to vote for their "Players Player" and a Managers Player trophy is also given out. Their has been some outstanding team and individual achievments last year and hopefully we can build on the sucess next year.
