Statement of Aims

The department is committed to using the material and human resources at its disposal in order to: *Stimulate in pupils an interest in and enjoyment of science, and to sustain that interest throughout school life, and beyond. * Enable pupils to become confident citizens in a technology based society, and to make informed decisions on matters of scientific importance. * Develop in pupils those skills and abilities which are relevant to the practice of science and will be of benefit in everyday life. * Promote an awareness of the usefulness and limitations of scientific methodologies. * Create an interest in, and respect for, the environment and an understanding of the need for conservation. * Emphasize the interdependence of science with citizenship issues. E.g. social, economic, technological, ethical and cultural factors. * Improve the ability of pupils to communicate scientific matters in a variety of suitable forms. * Encourage each pupil to achieve to their full potential as students of science. * Encourage staff development in respect of assuming responsibility within BPSC and further career movement. * Communicate to pupils, to parents of pupils, and to potential pupils the desirability of studying science at BPSC. |
