The Every Child Matters Centre (Tim Oakes Learning Centre) focuses on helping pupils with physical, learning, social and emotional challenges in their lives. Over the 5 years they are with us, they are all likely to experience some element of these difficulties, thus the title of the centre is absolutely appropriate. The facility is intended for everyone. Students feel valued and have a sense of belonging when referred into the centre. Students access support from the centre and recognise the wealth of assistance that is available.
We are a child-centred school which operates on the basis that every pupil has enormous potential for development. It is the role of the school to recognise students’ potential, have the highest possible expectations of their behaviour and performance and support and nurture them when they experience difficulties. The Centre recognises the benefit of early identification of need and action in order to support and involve parents and carers in achieving academic success, emotional wellbeing, good attendance, and high standards of behaviour.
The Learning Centre will provide a supportive, safe environment that provides a positive learning experience for all pupils at Burscough Priory Science College and encourages pupils to explore issues affecting their lives. Pupils will be re-integrated with support where appropriate. The Centre takes a child centred approach to developing the whole child in order to allow individuals to reach their full potential ultimately to access the world of work or further education. This bright, pleasant learning environment is complimented by 2 private meeting rooms and a private outdoor garden.
Construction on the centre started during the summer of 2010 and was ready in September the same year. Computing facilities include 6 fully networked computers and a smartboard and projector system.
In September 2012, the centre adopted the name of the Tim Oakes Learning Centre as a mark of respect for the late Tim Oakes in recognition for his contributions towards improving our school.
Tim Oakes was a West Lancashire Education Adviser who consulted with the headteacher and Board of Governors to ensure that Burscough Priory:
– Realised the potential in every child
– Relentlessly strived for academic excellence
His input into the school was instrumental in the excellent Ofsted Inspection findings of 2012.
