Team QinetiQ at the South Pole QinetiQ

Challenge

2009

The QinetiQ Challenge was a race to the Geographic South Pole which featured Ben Fogle and James Cracknell in the British Team.  This was the first race to the Geographic South Pole since Scott and Amundsen's legendary duel nearly 100 years ago. The race covered over 400 miles across one of the harshest environments in the world.

Pupils followed the progress of the race and then carried out an Investigation based on this to achieve a Bronze CREST award. To obtain the CREST award pupils had to design a jacket for use in similar conditions to the Antarctic.

To do this they researched the conditions that the QinetiQ team would encounter, adaptations of the animals that live in the Antarctic and Hilary and Amundsen’s fated journey.

Pupils then used this information to test out different materials to use in their jacket design by carrying out an insulation experiment.  This information was used in the overall jacket design.  This was added to their findings and presented to their class in the form of a poster.

Pupils completed at least 10hours of work to receive an award.
