Dear Parent/Carer,

Wednesday, 8th October is the date of Open Evening and you are welcome to visit us and see the new ICT rooms and Learning Resource Centre (Library) of which we are very proud.   School will be open from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. and we will finish at 12:10 p.m. when all the school transport will arrive.   If any pupil is unable to get home at this time, he/she can wait in the Dining Room until collected.   Please indicate on the reply slip if you want your son/daughter to have a school meal on 8th October.

Pupils should only return to Open Evening if they are helping or accompanying you around school.

The School Officials for 2008/09 are:-

Head Girl:         Lisa Sutton

Head Boy:        James Jamieson

School Orator:  Dominic Spencer

Girls’ Sports Captain:    Jessica Fay

Boys’ Sports Captain:   Tom Sheffield

and they are joined on the Senior Prefect Council by Eleanor Crewe, Amanda Lawes, Tyree Rawsthorne, Tom Malone and Sam Ward.   They will have fortnightly meetings with staff to represent the student voice and will, in pairs, run the five year councils.   The full school council will meet termly.

A number of subject areas have their own councils and also get opinions from pupils via questionnaires.   This is something we want to encourage.

One of the first tasks for the Senior Prefect Council is to write a School Travel Plan for which we will receive a grant of approximately £8,500.   The money needs to be spent on improving travel to school and the SPC will be consulting fully before writing their recommendations.

On Friday, 17th October we will be holding our Harvest Services and the following week are two very important evenings, Wednesday, 22nd October,  Year 8 Parents’ Evening, to which we shall be inviting a number of parents and Year 11 Post-16 Evening; Thursday, 23rd October Year 7 Form Teacher/Parents’ Evening and Year 11 Post-16 Evening.  Further details to follow.

We are currently putting the finishing touches to the Homework timetable and Year 10 and Year 11 parents will soon be receiving information about coursework deadlines and dates of GCSE modular examinations.   Look out for this information and note it on your calendars.   It will also be posted on the website.

Next Wednesday, 24th September – The Friends of Priory are holding their AGM in the Learning Resource Centre at 7:30 p.m.   It will be an informal ‘official’ meeting with wine and cheese and will give you the opportunity to look at our impressive alterations.   Everyone is invited.   Watch out for details of the Friends 50:50 Club and the programme of events for the year.

Congratulations to:

  • Jake Higham 8U and Adam Wilson 9S who have been selected to play roller hockey in a tournament in Hong Kong.
  • Emma Shepherd 8R, who has won the national CHAPS Ridden Championship – mixed age competition – on her horse, Murphy.
  • Beatrice Fletcher 10B, who was part of the Kingston (Hull) girls U16 ice hockey team which won the national final – Beatrice is the goalkeeper and she also plays for the Blackburn Junior Hawks where she is the only girl in a squad of 20.   She spent the summer training in Sweden at an ice hockey school.
  • Christopher Malliband 10B, who is a member of the Schome Space Experiment Team which is competing at the 2008 International Astronautical Congress in Glasgow on 20th October.
  • Callum Woods 10R, who has gained open water, advanced open water and emergency first response diving awards.  This is a great achievement for someone of Callum’s age.

In the last newsletter I omitted to mention Mrs. Knapper (teaching assistant), who also left us in summer to take up teacher training in Drama at Ormskirk School.

Yours sincerely, .

R. N. Leighton,

HEADTEACHER
